The process of implementing the Environmental Management System is not a standard method, as it depends on the environment and stakeholders, as well as on the size of the organization, the activity carried out and the products it manufactures or the services it provides. makes.
In order to implement an Environmental Management System according to ISO-14001: 2015, the following steps have to be followed:
Planning.- The context and stakeholders need to be identified, as well as their needs and expectations, to identify and evaluate the risks and opportunities inherent to the company's processes, to define the environmental policy, to identify significant environmental aspects, taking into account the Life Cycle, take into account the legal requirements and define the environmental objectives and goals to be achieved, in addition to establishing and implementing an environmental management program.
Implantation.- During the implantation process, it is necessary to take into account the resources in infrastructure, the responsibilities, training, sensitization and competence of the necessary personnel, communication, documents that are part of the Environmental Management System, Documentation, operational control and emergency plans with their respective response.
Verification.- Environmental management indicators should be established and the results monitored and measured, legal compliance assessed, nonconformities taken into account, corrective and preventive actions taken, records recorded and audits required. Environmental management system.
Acting.- In the action phase, following the monitoring of the environmental management indicators, actions should be identified and established that are aimed at the continuous improvement of the environmental management system. The results of all actions are analyzed in the management review, from which the environmental strategies and objectives that re-initiate the PDCA cycle.
The ISO 14001: 2015 standard, in force since September 2015, is the international standard that organizations must use for the implementation and certification of Environmental Management Systems. In addition to companies that implement a new Environmental Management System, those that already have one, certified according to the previous version of the Standard (9001: 2004), must implement the requirements of the 2015 version in order to renew their certificate.
In September 2018, all companies certified in ISO 14001: 2004, must have adapted their Environmental Management System, to the new requirements of 2015, otherwise their certificates will no longer have value.
